The city of schools
Eger is the second largest city of Northern Hungary, but the most famous one, thanks to the novel (Stars of Eger) of the popular Hungarian writer, Géza Gárdonyi. The city is an education and cultural center in Hungary by giving place for famous schools and institutions. The castle of Eger is the main ‘must-visit’ sight, as one of the biggest Turkish attacks happened here through the whole Hungarian history, in 1552. During the offensive, the knights of Eger protected the castle by beating down the enormous Turkish army. Other important place to visit is the Basilica of Eger and some popular museums. The city possesses a great importance as being a part of Eger’s wine region, regional wines are internationally acclaimed. Eger is worth visiting because of its different cultural programs as well.
